2 cops sued for assault, extortion
An elderly woman yesterday filed a case with a Chattogram court against two police officials and an informant, accusing them of assaulting and coercing her into paying Tk 50,000 for her son's release from police custody.
Shakina Akhter, 71, a resident of Boalkhali upazila, filed the case with the District Sessions Judge's court under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Penal Code.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Delwar Hossain, 45, and Assistant SI Monir Ahmed of Boalkhali Police Station and police informant Mohammad Rasel were made accused in the case.
Mohammed Yousuf, lawyer for Shakina, told The Daily Star that the court took the case into cognisance and asked the director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Chattogram to treat it as FIR. It also directed the chief judicial magistrate to take necessary action in this regard, he added.
As per the case statement, on October 27, the trio came to her Boalkhali residence looking for her elder son Nurul Amin.
SI Delwar was in uniform while the other two were in plainclothes. At one stage they started to assault her physically as she refused to sign a blank sheet as they demanded.
Police handcuffed and took away her younger son, Nurul Hasan, when he protested the assault on his mother.
Later that night, Nurul's family members went to the police station to get him out, where the two police officials had beaten him up. They demanded Tk 1 lakh to release Nurul.
Nurul was let go around 2:00am after the family paid Tk 50,000. Nurul later tried to file a complaint, but the OC refused to accept it, said the case statement.
