185 people killed last month: BHRC
A total of 185 people, on an average six every day, were killed in various incidents across the country in January, said a press release of Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC) yesterday.
Besides, road accidents took the lives of 263 people in the same period, it said.
BHRC revealed the information in their monthly report based on data from its district, upazila, and municipality branches, and national newspapers, in cooperation with International Human Rights Commission.
“Such reports surely indicate the extreme deterioration of law and order in the country. BHRC expresses deep concern over this increase in killings,” said a press release.
Of the 185, the highest number of people -- 64 -- were killed in social violence while the lowest -- two -- were killed in acid attacks.
Eighteen people were killed in the hands of law enforcement agencies, five fell victim to secret killing, eight were murdered after abduction, and 10 were killed after rape.
It also said 36 people fell victim to mysterious deaths, while 19 died by suicide. Six were killed for dowry, 17 over family feud, nine in political violence, five by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and five died because of doctors' negligence.
In addition, 40 were raped, three sexually harassed, and five tortured for dowry.
“Rule of law is essential for institutionalising democracy and building a human rights-based society,” said the press release.
The commission said the number of such incidents could be decreased to zero if law enforcement agencies took quick steps.
