3 Sust teachers attacked by BCL activists
Bangladesh Chhatra League activists attacked three teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) when they tried to stop a BCL factional clash on the campus yesterday.
The activists hurled stones at assistant proctors Jahid Hasan and Abu Hena Pohil and Lecturer Mahathir Mohammad Bappi. They took treatment at the university medial centre, said Proctor Prof Zahiruddin Ahmed.
The clash ensued in front of the food court after Sakhawat Hossain, BCL cultural affairs secretary at Sust, and Mushfiqur Rahman Zia, a top BCL leader, had an altercation, witnesses said.
The three teachers came under attack after they attempted to calm them when the clash continued at Shahporan Hall.
Contacted, Mushfiqur Rahman Zia claimed that five of his supporters were beaten up by Sakhawat, triggering the infighting.
Sakhawat dismissed the claim, saying that Zia's supporters locked into an altercation on Saturday night, which led to yesterday's skirmish. Police brought the situation under control, said the proctor.
Actions will be taken against those involved in the attack, he further said, adding that a probe committee was formed.
