10 hurt in 'BCL double attack' on left-leaning students
At least 10 leaders and activists of left-leaning student organisations were injured when activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League unit (dissolved) of Chittagong University allegedly attacked a procession on the campus yesterday, demanding re-election to Ducsu.
Afterwards, BCL activists stopped a bus some of those students were travelling on and assaulted them again.
Around noon, Pragatishil Chhatra Jote brought out the procession from Cucsu building. Some BCL activists, armed with rods and sticks, swooped on them near the central library, alleged Jannat Mumu, organising secretary of CU Samajtantrik Chhatra Front.
At least 10 activists including Chhatra Front's president Abid Khondokar and Chhatra Union's general secretary Gourachad Thakur were injured, said Jannat. Six female activists were also assaulted, she added.
Two of the injured were sent to CMCH. The rest were treated at CU medical centre. The students lodged a written complaint with Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury.
Later, police escorted seven leaders and activists from the proctor's office to the university's Gate-1 area. They boarded a bus there to go to the city.
Chhatra Union organising secretary Mahabuba Jahan Rumi, who was on the bus, said when the vehicle reached Hathazari upazila's Fatehbad area, some BCL activists intercepted it. “They shoved me and another female leader off the bus and beat up Gourachad again,” she said. He is now being treated at CMCH.
CU (dissolved) committee BCL deputy office secretary Mizanur Rahman claimed that the activists of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote chanted defamatory slogans against the prime minister and BCL. “That's why our activists stopped them.”
After the incident, the proctor told journalists that they were not aware of the procession. “If they [Chhatra Jote] had taken prior permission, we could have given them security,” he said. “We will take steps after investigation.”
Six teachers of CU and Jahangirnagar University protested the attack.
