New science mag hits stand
Biggan Chinta, a monthly science magazine, hit the stands yesterday with a view to creating awareness about science among people and eradicating superstitions from the society.
A publication of the daily Prothom Alo, the 96-page magazine made its cover story on Stephen Hawking, a famous physicist and cosmologist.
Edited by Abdul Qayyum, also an associate editor of Prothom Alo, the magazine published write ups of prominent writers living in home and abroad. It featured an elaborate interview of eminent educationist and scientist Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury.
At the cover unveiling programme of the magazine held yesterday at Prothom Alo office in the capital, Qayyum said the magazine will present science in such an interesting way that readers will not feel scared.
Dr Rezaur Rahman, former chief scientist of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, said newspapers publish news and articles on various issues but science, which is vital for a country, but often remains neglected.
Lack of write-ups is the main challenge for publishing a science magazine, he said, hopping that Biggan Chinta will not face such problems as the leading newspaper is involved with it.
Prothom Alo's Coordinator of Youth Programmes Munir Hasan, who also moderated the programme, said the magazine will involve all types of writers and will prominently project the works of local inventors.
The magazine will be available for Tk 50.
