The muezzin who was killed inside an Old Dhaka mosque yesterday might have been killed out of personal enmity, police said today ruling out any militant link.

“The murder’s type and trend does not relate to any recent militant activities,” said Monirul Islam, deputy inspector general of police, at a press briefing.

The 58-year-old muezzin who was serving at Jabbu Khanam Mosque in Old Dhaka’s Islampur for the last 28 years, was found dead in the early hours of yesterday.

“We primarily believe the incident is not related to militancy,” said Monirul, who is also heading Dhaka police’s Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime special unit.

The muezzin might have been killed out of any personal enmity, he said adding that police will also “cover all grounds properly in the investigation” of this incident.

The police official was speaking at a press conference at Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s media centre.
