MJF concerned over surge of child rape
Rights organisation Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) yesterday expressed grave concern over the increasing rate of child and teenage girl rape incidents across the country.
In a press statement, the organisation demanded exemplary punishments for the culprits.
“In the last three months, 99 children were raped, 14 were attempted to rape while 17 more were sexually harassed, according to a report of MJF,” Shaheen Anam, executive director of the organisation, said in the statement.
Among the incidents, many rape victims, including a third-grader in Banshkhali, Tanu, Rupa and Beauty, were killed.
“We demand that the government punish the culprits and ensure justice,” Shaheen Anam said.
In a latest development, India promulgated an ordinance providing stringent punishment, including death penalty, for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years.
MJF observed that long legal process, immoral interference and threat towards the plaintiff, aloofness of a section of the law enforcement agencies, and roguery of the influential persons are the reasons why the rape incidents have increased alarmingly.
The rights body underscored the need for organising awareness programmes to create public opinion on child and woman rape.
