UP members held for stealing rice
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested three people, including two union parishad (UP) members, after seizing 90 tonnes of rice of “Food for Work Programme” from a rice mill in Atahar of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila early yesterday.
On information, a Rab-5 team raided Nawab Auto Rice Mill when workers were changing the rice sacks which bore seals of the food department.
Bithi Rani Karmakar, and Aminul Islam, members of Nayalavanga UP, and Golam Rabbani, in-charge of Shibganj upazila LSD godown, were arrested on the spot, but mill owner Akbar Ali managed to flee, said Rab officials.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted to have illegally sold the rice meant for distribution under Ranihati Pardiar Project. A case was filed against the three and Akbar with Sadar Police Station.
