Man gets life term for throwing acid on college student
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for throwing acid on an Eden college student in January 2013.
Monir Uddin, 28, from Brahmanbaria, was also fined Tk 1 lakh.
According to the verdict, the money will be realised by selling his property if he fails to give it. Later, the money will be handed over to the victim’s family.
Judge Pradip Kumar Roy of the First Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court delivered the judgment in the presence of the convict.
The court, however, acquitted another accused Masum, also a friend of the convict, as the charge brought against him was not proved.
On January 15 in 2013, Monir threw acid on Sharmin Akter Ankhi as she refused his marriage proposal at a marriage registrar’s office in Chankharpool area, according to the prosecution.
The victim’s brother Mohiuddin Ahmed filed a case with Bangshal Police Station accusing Monir and Masum.
On January 26, police arrested Monir in Kurkutichhari of Barkol upazila in Rangamati. The following day, he was placed on a nine-day remand.
On January 20, the High Court directed the government to arrest Monir and Masum as police were reluctant to hold them.
On March 14 in 2013, detectives pressed charges against the two accused and the court framed charges against them on November 7 the same year.
Advocate Fahmida Akhter of Bangladesh National Women’s Lawyers Association stood for the complainant.
