Mainamati Museum: 1,000yr old idol to be put on display soon
A thousand-year-old sun god idol, recovered from a village in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali in 2017, will be put on display at Mainamati Museum in Kotbari of Comilla soon.
The statue, made of touchstone, weighs approximately 27 maunds. Its estimated value is around Tk 700 crore, said the museum authorities.
“In Noakhali, a villager in Baharkot village under Joyag union in the upazila was digging soil when he discovered the statue,” said Md Hafizur Rahman, assistant custodian of the museum. “Later, officials of the district administration recovered it.”
He said the statue was kept at Sonaimuri Police Station for a long time. “Finally it was handed over to the museum a few days back.”
The length of the statue is 1.95 metres and the width 0.8 metres, he added.
Dr Ahmed Abdullah, custodian of the museum, said, “The black stone statue may be from around 11th or 12th century. It will be put on display soon.”
