Lacroix lauds Bangladesh's role
Visiting UN Under-Secretary-General, Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix yesterday highly praised Bangladesh for its contributions to UN peacekeeping, and lauded its role in supporting efforts of the UN for political solutions in various parts of the world.
He also appreciated Bangladesh for remaining actively engaged in policy-level negotiations and consultations in the UN.
Lacroix made the comments when he called on Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the state guest house Padma. He was accompanied by UN Military Adviser Lieutenant General Carlos Humberto Loitey, and UN Police Adviser Luís Carrilho.
Recognising Bangladesh's support to the initiatives of the UN in peacekeeping and peace-building, he hoped that Bangladesh would continue to stand beside the UN in fulfilling its peacekeeping agenda.
The foreign minister highlighted the successful participation of women peacekeepers in the UN peacekeeping missions at various levels, including deployment of a full women police unit in Haiti. Ali also reiterated the government's commitment to continue its participation in the UN peacekeeping as well as in other initiatives of the UN towards establishing peace, said a foreign ministry press release.
He assured the Under-Secretary-General of Bangladesh's support to the secretary general's reform agenda for UN peacekeeping operations.
