Khadiza’s life support removed, say doctors

The life support of Khadiza Begum Nargis, who is now undergoing treatment at the Square Hospitals in Dhaka, has been removed as her condition is improving gradually, doctors said.

“She was still unconscious as it will take time for her full recovery,” AM Rezaur Satter, associate consultant, Neurosurgery department at Square Hospitals, told The Daily Star this evening.

“She will be under observation for at least two to three more weeks,” said the physician.

He also said that the girl was kept in oxygen support adding that Khadiza can move her right hand and leg slightly.

Meanwhile, after visiting Khadiza at the hospital earlier in the day, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said her condition is gradually improving.

“Proper treatment of Khadiza is possible in the country. But, if the doctors want, she might be sent abroad for better treatment,” the minister told reporters.

Earlier, the government announced to bear all the medical expenses of the Sylhet Government Women's College student.

Khadiza Begum Nargis was brutally hacked by Badrul Alam, a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), with a machete on the campus of Murari Chand College (MC College) on October 3. The 23-year-old went there to sit an examination.

A part of the attack was filmed presumably by a bystander with a mobile phone. The video clip went viral.

In the clip, a youth is seen repeatedly hacking a girl lying on the ground. There were some bystanders nearby.

However, some students along with locals caught and beat up Badrul before handing him over to the police.

Following the attack, Khadiza was initially admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College where she had undergone a surgery.

She was shifted to Neurosurgery department at the Square Hospitals in the capital On October 4, Tuesday morning where doctors carried out more surgeries on her before she was put on life support.

On October 5, Wednesday, Badrul confessed before a Sylhet magistrate trying to kill Khadiza. He was suspended by the Sust the same day.
