JU student found enrolled with fake FF certificate

The Jahangirnagar University authorities yesterday opened an inquiry into allegations that a second-year female student of archaeology had got admitted with a counterfeit certificate of freedom fighter of her father, after she failed to present related papers on demand.

Umme Sultana admitted to The Daily Star that she did so by paying Tk 3.9 lakh to an admission official, Billal Hossain, through two of her acquaintances, Alifa Ahmed and Reazul Islam, both students of anthropology of the university who will be in their third year in a few days.

Umme Sultana admitted to The Daily Star that she did so by paying Tk 3.9 lakh to an admission official, Billal Hossain, through two of her acquaintances, Alifa Ahmed and Reazul Islam, both students of anthropology of the university who will be in their third year in a few days.

None of the three who allegedly helped Sultana was available on the phone for comments.

Sultana said she just paid the money and knew nothing of how the certificate was obtained. Wishing anonymity, a an administrative staff of JU said several employees were involved in admitting students through shoddy means, and the nexus was thriving due to inaction by the authorities.

Sultana was asked to submit by Tuesday a copy of the Red Book listing freedom fighters and another of the gazette declaring his father a freedom fighter, but she could show none. Registrar Abu Bakr Siddque said an inquiry was launched.
