JP candidate wins nomination appeal
Nomination of the Jatiya Party (JP)-nominated mayoral candidate for the Barisal City Corporation (BCC) polls was declared valid yesterday, after he won an appeal to the election commission.
Nomination paper of Iqbal Hossain Tapos, as mayor candidate nominated by JP (Ershad) was validated, after Bangladesh Bank resent a fresh letter informing that he was not a loan defaulter as he rescheduled his loan earlier.
However, the appeal of independent mayoral candidate Bashir Ahmed Jhunu (rebel JP) against cancellation of nomination paper, was rejected.
After hearing of the appeal petitions on Thursday, cancelled nomination papers of one of the two mayor candidates was declared as valid, said Md Helaluddin, district election officer and assistant returning officer of BCC election.
On the other hand, the cancellation of BNP-backed councilor candidate Jamal Hossain Noman's nomination paper was also reversed, after his loan was proved to be duly rescheduled during the appeal hearing yesterday.
Till filing of this report, seven mayoral candidates, 113 candidates for 30 general ward councillors and 37 candidates for 10 ward councillors (reserved for females) were clear to contest the Barisal City Corporation election.
According to its announced schedule, the BCC election will be held on July 30.
