Conference on Bengal studies opens
The four-day “5th International Congress of Bengal Studies” began at Jahangirnagar University yesterday.
International Society of Bengal Studies in association with JU organised the event for the first time in Bangladesh.
Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam inaugurated the event, with Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman in the chair, at Zahir Raihan Auditorium.
The VC said Bangla language and literature gained significance in the world as the works of litterateurs like Rabindranath Tagore, Nazrul Islam and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay are being translated into foreign languages.
Prof Anisuzzaman said Bengal studies should focus not only on literature but also on history, culture, philosophy, politics as well as anthropology. A total of 250 researchers from 20 countries presented their papers.
