Infighting foils Ctg BNP meeting
A meeting of BNP Chittagong North District unit was foiled due to infighting of the party activists on Nasimon Bhaban premises in Chittagong city yesterday.
The activists of two rival groups -- one loyal to BNP central Vice-Chairman Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury and another to North district unit Convener Aslam Chowdhury -- locked into a clash at 3:00pm, immediately before holding the meeting.
They also hurled chairs at each other and vandalised the stage.
At least five activists of the party were injured in the incident and four of them were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said police.
Eye witnesses said supporters of Gias Uddin took hold of the stage before. After the supporters of Aslam had arrived there, a clash ensued over taking the control of the stage.
The groups kept chanting slogans for their respective leaders even after the central leaders including Khandakar Mosharraf, Golam Akbar Khandaker and Mir Nasir Uddin arrived there.
Rebuking the activists for chanting slogans, Mosharraf gave a brief speech.
In his speech, he urged all to take preparation for a movement against autocratic government.
BNP would go to election only after a level playing field is ensured, he said.
The leaders then left the venue as no other leaders gave speech.
It was the first of the three such meetings organised to stimulate the party's grassroot in presence of a visiting central team led by BNP standing committee member Dr Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain.
Two other meetings of Chittagong South District and city units are scheduled to be held today and tomorrow.
