HSC pass rate in Science group falls

The pass rate of Science group in Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations under Chittagong Education Board has dipped this year while the rate rose significantly for Business Studies and Humanities groups.

The Science group pass rate this year is 73.11 percent as opposed to 77.34 percent last year. The rates for Business Studies and Humanities this year are 68.01 and 51.69 percent while those were 65.36 and 47.49 percent respectively last year.

“Most of the students attained poor marks in Physics, Chemistry, ICT and English. This is the main reason for the fall in the pass rate in Science Group,” said Mohammad Mahbub Hossain, examinations controller of the board.

A total of 1,187 students secured GPA-5 in Science, while in Business Studies and Humanities, the number of GPA- 5 achievers are 353 and 73.

This year, a larger number of colleges have seen all its examinees pass the HSC exams under the board. Five colleges -- Faujdarhat Cadet College, Halishahar Cantonment Public School & College, Cantonment English School & College, Gulshakhali Border Model College and Sitakunda Girls' High School & College -- achieved a hundred percent pass rate this year while there was only one such college last year.

The only institution from where no student has passed the exam is Chattogram Cosmopolitan College in Chittagong city.

The total number of GPA-5 achievers increased slightly this year while the overall pass rate also went up just a notch.

A total of 1,613 students -- 830 boys and 783 girls -- secured GPA-5 this year. The number was 1,319 last year.

This year's pass rate is 62.73 percent -- up from 61.09 percent the previous year.

As in previous years, girls outperformed boys with 65.87 percent pass rate against the latter's 59.47 percent rate.

A total of 96,858 students -- 49,230 girls and 47,628 boys -- appeared in the HSC exams this year from 253 colleges and 60,755 of them passed it successfully.

Colleges outside Chittagong city also showed an increase in pass rate -- 59.25 percent, up from last year's rate of 55.81 percent.
