HC upholds death for two
The High Court yesterday upheld a lower court verdict that had sentenced two convicts to death for killing Mofakkharul Ahmed Sohel, a doctor of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, in the capital's Dhanmondi in 2008.
The convicts, Mofakkharul's driver Saiful Islam, 36, and Saiful's cousin Firoz Miah, 35, are now in Dhaka Central Jail.
According to the prosecution, a gang of miscreants led by Saiful killed Dr Mofakkharul in his residence on January 11 for grabbing his property. They dismembered the body and dumped the parts at Gaibanda and Gazipur.
A Dhaka court on January 20, 2009 sentenced Saiful and Firoz to death and Saiful's brother-in-law Bulu to five years' rigorous imprisonment.
The HC yesterday acquitted Bulu, who is now on bail, as allegation against him was not proved, said Shahidul Islam Sarder, a state-appointed lawyer.
Saiful and Firoz gave confessional statements to magistrates during investigations, he added.
