Greek captain's body recovered from Karnaphuli
Body of the captain of Cyprus-flagged ship was recovered from the Karnaphuli near Chittagong port yesterday morning -- 38 hours after he fell from the vessel into the water at the port.
Crewmembers of the ship named MV Evina identified the body of Markopoulous Vasileious, 57, a Greek national, after the port's security officials recovered it from the shore near New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) around 9:45am.
MV Evina arrived from China carrying 28,458 tonnes of steel pipes and machinery, and berthed at the jetty 7 on Monday.
The captain's body will be sent to his homeland Greece on completion of formalities.
On Monday night, Vasileious slipped from a rope ladder as he was measuring the vessel's draught at the jetty around 7:45pm.
People on the ship tried to rescue the captain by throwing buoy but failed as he was caught in the ebb tide.
