Four officials get legal notice to stop Buriganga pollution
A rights organisation yesterday sent a legal notice to the government officials concerned in Keraniganj, asking them to remove all wastes from the south bank of the Buriganga river in a week and take effective steps to stop further dumping there.
The notice, served by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, says a team of the organisation has recently visited the south bank and found that waste is being dumped in many places, continuously polluting its water.
This is a violation of the High Court directives, which were issued in June 2011, ordering the authorities to take effective steps to stop disposal of garbage into the Buriganga to save it from pollution, HRPB President Manzill Murshid said in the notice.
He said appropriate legal steps would follow if the authorities did not comply with the notice. It was sent to the upazila chairman of Keraniganj, the upazila nirbahi officer and its executive magistrate, and the officer-in-charge of Keraniganj police.
