Four aspirants pledge to cooperate
Four mayoral aspirants in Rajshahi yesterday pledged to extend all sorts of cooperation for holding a free and fair city corporation election.
The aspirants -- Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul of BNP, Murad Morshed (independent), Habibur Rahman of Jaitya Party and Shafiqul Islam of Islami Andolon -- also promised to build a corruption-free city corporation if they are voted to power.
They were participating in a “face-to-face with dwellers” programme at the city's Moonlight Garden Hall. Shushahoner Jonno Nagorik organised it.
BNP's candidate Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul called upon the voters to stay alert against any conspiracy against people's franchise.
“Unite when you find any signs of vote rigging,” he said, adding that they will participate in the election by braving all obstacles.
Independent candidate Murad Morshed said he want to establish a true local government system if he is voted to power.
Habibur Rahman of Jaitya Party said if he is elected mayor he would resolve problems like waterlogging, illegal occupation of footpaths and roads. Besides, he promised to develop the lives of slum dwellers.
On the other hand, Islami Andolon's candidate Shafiqul Islam expressed his determination to make Rajshahi an industrial city. He said he wants to be a servant of people.
Shujon's Rajshahi city unit president Piar Bux chaired the programme moderated by its central coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarker.
Meanwhile, the participants criticised Awami League's candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton as he did not attend the programme.
However, city AL's organising secretary Nurul Islam Sarker Aslam was present there and explained Liton's absence.
Aslam said Liton went to Puthia to attend funerals of the mother of AL lawmaker Abdul Wadud Dara and son of a local journalist.
When contacted over the phone, the former mayor's personal assistant Masud Rana told this correspondent that the funerals were scheduled earlier and that is why Liton could not join the programme.
