Five journos get Orbis Awards

Five journalists were awarded yesterday for reporting on prevention and treatment of childhood blindness.

Orbis International awarded the journalists with "Feature Writing Award on Childhood Blindness 2014-15 on Childhood Blindness" at The Daily Star Centre in the capital.

Naimul Haq of The Daily Observer, Probir Kumar Biswas of a Khulna-based newspaper Jonmobhumi, Shahnaj Begum of The Daily Inqilab, Shebika Debnath of Sangbad, and Farhana Khanam Mithila, a contributor to Alokito Bangladesh, received a crest, a certificate and a cash reward each.

Later, Orbis in support with Mass Line Media Centre organised a workshop for journalists on child health which was presided over by Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul.

An ophthalmologist of Orbis, Dr Lutful Hossain, said every child should have at least one eye check-up before they turn five to prevent permanent damage.

He also advised against taking any homemade remedies instead of going to specialists for eye problems.
