Elephants trample three to death
Three persons including a woman were trampled to death by wild elephants in Garo hills of Jhinaigati upazila under Sherpur district last night.
The dead were Jahurul Haque, 50, Ohitun Begum, wife of Sunnat Ali of Panbar village, and Abdul Hai, 32 of Gurucharan Dudhnoi village.
Anarullah, former chairman of Kangsha Union Parishad, said a herd of around 50-60 wild elephants entered the Panbor village from the Garo hills around 9:00pm.
Normally, the villagers would try to drive away the elephants by beating drums, bursting crackers and burning torches, but the elephants were too fast, he said.
The elephants also damaged crop fields and several houses.
With the three, at least nine people were trampled by wild elephants in last four months in Jhitaigati and Sribordi.
