Du Celebrates 94th Founding Anniversary
Dhaka University campus yesterday was in a festive mood and abuzz with its current and former students celebrating their association with the 94-year-old institution.
Despite summer vacation and the ongoing month of Ramadan, students in colourful attire thronged the campus to celebrate Dhaka University Day.
The celebration kicked off in the morning at Mall Chattar where students gathered with banners and festoons and with an orchestra. Prime Minister's International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi inaugurated the programme by hoisting the national and university flags, and releasing pigeons.
He urged DU students to prepare themselves with the power of knowledge to get succeeded in global completions.
In a message, DU VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said the university has a history of producing brilliant students who later took leadership and played vital roles in every possible sector at home and abroad.
The VC led a colourful procession which paraded through the campus and ended at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) where a discussion on this year's theme “Higher Education and Sustainable Development” was held.
At the discussion, Education Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan said higher education is not only about obtaining a certificate rather it is about achieving social value. He also urged the Dhaka University authorities to develop its communication with universities across the world.
One of the enthusiastic students, Tanin Mehdi, said the university eagerly embrace students coming from different backgrounds and nurture them in a friendly platform, imbuing them with the sense of equity and integrity. Even a shy youth from the village easily mix with other students and turns out to be a strong personality both mentally and professionally.
An alumnus said, “Our teachers often shared recent and ancient stories and events apart from syllabus which gradually made us conscious about secularism, gender equity and our self-respect. Dhaka University not only imparts book-based knowledge rather it provides opportunities to its students to become self-educated and practical.”
Fahad Bin Kashem of law department, said, “We expect that DU will put more emphasis on research and knowledge based education rather than focusing on job-oriented short curriculums.”
The celebration included an exhibition of rare manuscripts, display of arts and crafts, and sharing reminiscence and cultural programmes.
The registrar building, arts building, business faculty, TSC, senate building, Curzon Hall and newly established Mukti o Gonotantra Toron were decorated with attractive lights.
