Doctors' rally blocks road at CMCH
Doctors and medical students organised a rally blocking the road in front of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in Chittagong city yesterday for around two hours, causing suffering to patients of the hospital and commuters on the road.
Several hundred doctors of CMCH and students from different medical colleges including Chittagong Medical College and Southern Medical College took position on KB Fazlul Quader Road around 12:00noon, said eyewitnesses.
The Chittagong unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) organised the event protesting misconduct of some journalist leaders with BMA leaders during a meeting in presence of high officials of Ministry of Health at Max Hospital in Chittagong city on Sunday night.
The ministry officials were in Chittagong to investigate the allegation of death of a girl due to wrong treatment in Max Hospital early Saturday.
Many on-duty doctors of CMCH joined the rally, leaving patients in the hospital unattended, said eye witnesses. However, emergency services were open during that time.
BMA Chittagong city unit President Mujibul Haque Khan and General Secretary Faisal Iqbal Chowdhury spoke at the rally, which continued for about two hours.
Requesting anonymity, attendants of patients in different wards said most of the doctors were not inside the wards at that time.
Contacted, CMCH Director Brig Gen Jalal Uddin said he did not have information of doctors going outside while on duty. “All the activities in wards, the outdoor and the emergency were normal."
The rally not only hampered treatment of patients, but also brought difficulties to commuters. Vehicular movement from Chawkbazar to Sholashahar Gate 2 remained halted during the programme of the doctors and students on the road.
