Dhaka round of Math Olympiad sets sail
The Dhaka regional round of National Mathematical Olympiad 2016 was held at the capital's Residential Model College yesterday.
Principal Brig Gen Md Abdul Hannan inaugurated the festival.
Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee organised the competition where 3,500 students from 162 schools of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Munshiganj and Manikganj participated.
One hundred and fifty students were selected to compete in the final round to be held on February 12-13 on the St Joseph Higher Secondary School campus in the city. The students will compete with the winners from 23 other regions of the country.
The best performers will be selected under four groups -- primary (class III-V), junior (class VI-VIII), secondary (class IX-X and SSC examinees) and higher secondary (class XI-XII and HSC examinees) -- for the final round.
The best performers will get the opportunity to compete in the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad in Hong Kong where participants from over 100 countries are expected to take part from July 6 to 16.
Addressing yesterday's programme, Olympiad committee member Prof Mohammad Kaykobad said, “Bangladesh is now organising Math Olympiad in a larger scale than India.”
He hoped that the Bangladeshi students will win gold medals in the international event.
Prothom Alo Associate Editor Abdul Quayum echoed him.
Dutch-Bangla Bank Managing Director KS Tabrez, mathematician Prof Khodadad Khan, Prof Lutfuzzaman, scientist Dr Rezaur Rahman, psychiatrist Dr Mohit Kamal and olympiad committee general secretary Munir Hasan were, among others, present.
