Customs asks for pass-books of WB’s 16 tax-free cars

The Customs Intelligence and Investigations Directorate today sought some documents from the World Bank regarding 16 vehicles alleging that the global lender had misused the tax-free vehicles.

Besides asking for the pass-books of the vehicles, the directorate also sought to know the whereabouts of the vehicles, Director General of Customs Intelligence Mainul Khan told The Daily Star.

The directorate made the queries in a letter addressed to the WB country director.

The WB has been given seven days to respond.

According to Bangladesh’s law, foreigners working here and also the aid agencies can avail tax-free vehicles but have to take a pass-book from the Custom Intelligence, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports quoting the director general.

Through its own investigation, the Customs Intelligence found that those vehicles were imported into the country four to five years ago. But, the bank did not submit specific information regarding those, the daily quoted the customs officials as saying.
