Create an appetite for books in children
Publishers need to create an appetite for books among children by not only ensuring that those are written by best authors but also adding creative and attractive illustrations in those, said Bishwo Shahitto Kendro (BSK) Founder Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed yesterday.
Publishers will also have to ensure quality production such as quality papers and printing, he said.
“A sense of desire has to be created among children so that when they see a book they long for it,” he added.
Prof Sayeed was speaking at a discussion on “Developing reading habit project and possibilities of publishing industry” at BSK in the capital.
Bangladesh Gyan O Shrijonshil Prakashak Shamiti (BGSPS) organised the event.
He said everyone including deprived and destitute children from remote villages has to be included in the reading habit project.
Children have to be provided with best books, and they have to be introduced to best works of Bangla language.
He said the BSK is working in this regard through its book reading initiatives. It has so far bought 8.5 million books for its readers.
He also urged publishers to remain cautious about mistakes because a wrong word can give a wrong meaning.
Chowdhury Mufad Ahmed, additional secretary of the education ministry, also spoke at the discussion, chaired by Farid Ahmed, president of BGSPS.
