Human Rights Violations

BNP seeks int'l support

BNP yesterday presented statistics of the country's human rights violation to diplomatic representatives of different countries, and urged them to take the issue into their accounts to boost democratic practice here.

“According to our estimate, over 500 opposition party men have gone missing while 10,000 people have been victimised of political killing under Awami League rule,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a seminar held at a Dhaka hotel, Fakhrul came up with the statistics claiming that around 78,000 cases have been lodged, implicating around 18 lakh activists of his party recently. “I would like to request the international community to take a note in this regard for the sake of smooth democratic practice,” he said.

The government has become desperate and it is now trying to hang on to power forever by violating human rights, rule of law and the country's constitution, Fakhrul alleged.

During the seminar, BNP screened a documentary about the country's overall human rights situation from 2009 to 2018.

Representatives from embassies and high commissions of USA, France, India, Canada, Sweden, Pakistan, Iran, European Union and United Nations, along with top-level leaders of BNP attended the programme.
