Barisal: Candidates promise big
With campaigning on in full swing, mayoral candidates in Barisal are trying their best to woo voters with lofty promises for the development of the city.
Yesterday, BNP-backed Mojibor Rahman Sarwar visited Bazar Road, Nazir Pole and Bakla areas and spoke to locals.
“Most of the development works for Barisal region including constituting the city corporation and initiative for establishing a public university were undertaken during the BNP-led government,” he said.
“Once elected mayor, I will work towards solving the city's waterlogging problem, repair damaged roads and improve the drainage system. I promise to develop the city further and make it a beautiful and clean one,” he added. Central leader Altaf Hossain Chowdhury accompanied him.
Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, the AL mayoral hopeful, also vowed to work for the development of the city. He visited the West Kaunia and BISIC areas in the afternoon.
He highlighted the ongoing construction of Padma bridge and other development works, such as construction of bridges and roads, initiated by the Awami League government for the progress of the southern region, and said if elected mayor, he would continue the work.
Iqbal Hossain Taposh of Jatiya Party held a views-exchange meeting in Oxford Mission area. He spoke to locals about various issues they were facing and assured them of resolving those.
Manisha Chakrabarty of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal and Abul Kalam Azad of CPB also met locals in different areas. They pledged to give highest importance to people's rights and rid the administration of corruption.
They also called upon voters to bring in a new face in the mayoral post apart from Awami League and BNP.
Meanwhile, Obaydur Rahaman Mahabub of Islami Andolon Bangladesh campaigned in C&B area and reaffirmed his stance against corruption.
Barisal City Corporation has an area of 58 square kilometers, with a total of 2,42,166 voters, an additional 30,909 voters than the previous election. The BCC polls will be held on July 30.
