Ambulance takes 4 lives including pregnant woman

Four people including a six-month pregnant woman and a minor boy were killed as an ambulance ran them over at the emergency gate of Dhaka Medical College Hospital this morning.

The deceased were identified as Amena Begum alias Surjya Begum, who was pregnant for six months, Golenoor Begum and her seven-year-old son Sakib, and an unidentified beggar aged around 60, Bachchu Mia, sub-inspector of DMCH police outpost, told The Daily Star.

The accident took place when the ambulance was ploughed through the emergency gate around 9:15am, leaving Sakib and the beggar dead on the spot and injuring two others.

Of them, Gulenoor succumbed to her injuries at the hospital around 2:30pm while Amena met the same fate at the Intensive Care Union of the hospital around 6:00pm.

Visiting the spot, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim termed the accident as blatant irresponsibility of the ambulance driver.

“The driver has been arrested. Legal action will be taken against him,” the minister said.
