AL MP gets bail in case over assaulting polls official
Ruling Awami League Lawmaker Muztafizur Rahman Chowdhury from Banshkhali constituency in Chittagong got bail from a Chittagong court in a case filed over assaulting an election officer in the upazila during the sixth phase of Union Parisad (UP) elections.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Sajjad Hossain passed the order after he surrendered before the court seeking bail, said Advocate Abul Hashem, a lawyer for the MP.
The High Court ordered the MP to surrender before the court by June 20. The order entitled the law enforcers to arrest him if he did not surrender within the time.
On June 1, Muztafizur allegedly beat up election officer Zahidul Islam at the office of Banshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).
Mustafizur called him to the UNO office, and at first he verbally abused him and then beat him up as he did not follow the instructions of the lawmaker's personal secretary to employ electoral officials for the polls as per their choice, alleged Zahidul.
Election Commission postponed the polls in the upazila after Zahdul informed it of the matter.
Later, the case was filed against the MP in this connection.
