6 placed on 3-day remand
A court in Chittagong yesterday placed six accused on a three-day remand each in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal leader Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, who was shot dead in front of his transport office in Chittagong's Kadamtali Bus Stand area on December 3 last year.
The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Al Imran Khan passed the remand order after the six were produced before the court with a 10-day remand prayer for each of the accused, said Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Kazi Shahabuddin.
The six accused are Nurunabi, 32; his younger brother Kaisar, 25; Sarif, 35; Jasim alias Totla Jasim, 29; Salauddin alias Dulal, 40; and Towkir Hossen alias Sejan, 30.
Earlier, the six secured anticipatory bail from the High Court (HC) in the case. They surrendered before the lower court on June 7 and the court sent them to jail after rejecting bail prayer.
With the six, a total number of 12 persons were arrested in connection with the murder.
After the murder, family members, coworkers and business leaders alleged that extortionists -- mostly BCL and Jubo League men -- plotted the murder to take revenge and establish control on transport business as Harun, the owner of ST Transport, had taken a firm stance against the extortion of BCL men.
After investigation, police said Harun was murdered as he forced a group of criminals to return Tk 28,000 mugged from a truck driver in Madarbari area.
Officer-in-Charge Nejam Uddin of Sadarghat Police Station told The Daily Star, “Two other prime accused, Alamgir and his younger brother Hridoy, are on the run while police were conducting drive to arrest them.”
Harun's uncle Dastogir Chowdhury was a leader of BNP while his younger uncle Jahangir Chowdhury is the president of Sadarghat thana AL.
