5 lakh yaba pills seized
Law enforcers in separate drives recovered around 5 lakh yaba pills and arrested five alleged drug traders from Dhaka, St Martin's Island, Rangpur and Narayanganj on Thursday and yesterday.
In Dhaka, Rapid Action Battalion arrested an alleged female drug dealer along with 10,000 yaba pills from Mirpur on Thursday evening, reports UNB.
The arrestee is Ripa Akhter, 24.
On information, a team of Rab-2 conducted a drive in front of “Maa Electric Zone” at Mirpur-10 around 6:45pm. Ripa was waiting there to hand over a yaba consignment to someone after receiving it from a courier service, said Shahnur Islam, assistant director (media) of Rab-2.
During primary interrogation, Ripa said she used to bring yaba pills through various courier service companies from Teknaf and Chittagong. She used to hide the tablets inside soap and tissue boxes, he added.
Meanwhile, a team of coastguards (east zone) seized four lakh yaba pills from a wooden boat in St Martin's Island yesterday morning.
Tipped-off, the team conducted a drive in the island. During the drive, they noticed the boat around 8:30am and signaled it to stop. The people onboard fled and left it abandoned. The coastguards then searched the boat and found the yaba pills, said a press release.
No one was held in this connection, the release added. The pills, worth around Tk 20 crore, were handed over to Teknaf Police Station.
Meanwhile, Rab-13 arrested a suspected drug trader with 5,000 pieces of yaba tablets in Rangpur city's Shapla Chattar area yesterday night, reports BSS.
The arrestee is Md Shahidul Islam, 37. The tablets were hidden inside packets, used for packaging powdered milk.
During primary interrogation, Shahidul confessed that he and his associates were involved in the illegal drug trade for a long time. He was handed over to Kotwali Police Station, said Rab-13 Commanding Officer Mozammel Haque.
Meanwhile, in Narayanganj, Rab-2 conducted a drive at Kanchan Bridge toll point yesterday and arrested three persons with 90,150 pieces of yaba pills, said a press release.
The arrestees are Md Kawser, 20, Monowar Bin Alam Abrar, 26, and Jewel Rana, 32. They were allegedly involved in yaba smuggling.
Rab also seized Tk 22,000 from their possessions.
On information that a bus supervisor in collaboration with two passengers were smuggling yaba from Chittagong to Mymensingh, a team of Rab-2 conducted the drive in the area around 6:40am.
During the drive, they signaled a passenger bus of United Travel to stop. The supervisor and two passengers tried to flee away through a bus window but the law enforcers stopped them.
In primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed that they were involved in the drug trade for a long time, the release added.
