3 Neo JMB men identified over Gulistan cops attack: CTTC chief
Police today claimed that they identified three suspected members of “Neo-JMB” who were directly involved with April 29 attack on the law enforcers in Gulistan that left two traffic police constables and a community traffic policeman injured.
The information came up at the primary interrogation of the two suspected cell members arrested during a drive in Narayanganj’s Fatullah yesterday, Monirul Islam, chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan police (DMP) said at a briefing at DMP’s media centre.
He however did not mention the names of the three suspected militants.
Apart from the two suspected cell members, there were a so-called “amir” who used to broadcast the news of the attacks through various media, the CTTC chief said.
He further said that the attackers did not receive any training on making bombs. “They used to learn how to make bombs on trial and error process as all of them (arrestees) were engineers by profession,” said the CTTC boss.
There are some Neo-JMB groups who tried to grab the attention of Islamic State (IS) by doing such attacks, he said adding that, “But no involvement of IS with this cell has been found so far.”
Asked whether the five suspected militants arrested from the city’s Bashundhara area on August 9 had any link with this cell, the CTTC chief said they were investigating whether the so-called amir had any connections with them. But the other members were not in touch of them, the police official said.
In a drive yesterday, CTTC members destroyed a hideout and arrested the two militants from Narayanganj.
The arrestees were identified as the owner of the house Farid Uddin Rumee, 27, a teacher of Mechanical and Production Engineering in the capital’s Ahsanullah University, and Mishuk Khan Mizan, 24, a final-year engineering student of Narayanganj Polytechnic Institute.
Rumee’s wife Jannatul Foara Anu, 26, a banker, was detained for interrogation.
The officials also claimed to have recovered bomb-making chemicals and toy guns from the scene.
On April 29, two traffic police constables and a community traffic policeman were injured in a blast in the capital’s Gulistan. Later on May 26, two people, including a female police officer, were injured when a bomb went off near a police pickup near Malibagh intersection.
Besides, two policemen were injured when another bomb went off at Science Lab intersection on August 31.
Besides, IEDs were recovered in the capital’s Paltan and Khamarbari areas on July 24.
