Gunfight between cops, abductors hurts 7
Seven persons including four policemen were injured in a gunfight between a gang of abductors and the law enforcers on Jessore-Jhenidah highway at Churamankathi in Jessore on Thursday night.
Jessore police rescued one Abdul Aziz following the incident and arrested three of the gang.
The abductors -- Ashraful Islam, 32, Rahamat Ali, 26, and Jahirul Islam, 30 -- are undergoing treatment for their bullet wounds at Jessore Medical College Hospital under police custody.
Following complaint from truck drivers, a team from Jessore Kotwali Police Station chased a car, which the gang of six used to abduct Abdul Aziz, 35, from a road in Jhikargachha upazila on that night. Sensing the presence of police, the gang opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back, said police.
Officer-in-Charge Shikder Akkas Ali, Sub-Inspector Shamim, and two constables were also injured and took first-aid from the hospital where Aziz is also undergoing treatment for bruises inflicted by the abductors.
Police seized a gun and one round of bullet from the spot.
