11-year-old 'raped' by neighbour

An 11-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly raped by a youth in a village of Sharsha upazila in Jessore on Thursday evening.

The family of the girl filed a case with Sharsha Police Station, accusing Monirul Islam, 25, of the same village yesterday.

The accused is on the run, said Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station. Action will be taken after an investigation, he added.

The girl's family said that on Thursday night, she went to a village grocery shop, and from there, Monirul tricked her into his home and raped her there.

Later locals rescued the girl hearing her screams, he added.

She was treated at a hospital.

Monirul is the son of ward-level Awami League leader Kabirul Islam. The Daily Star tried to contact him, but his mobile phone was found switched off.
