10 lives lost in road accidents
At least ten people were killed and 59 others injured in road accidents in four districts across the country yesterday.
In Khulna, a passenger bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Dumuria upazila around noon, killing at least five people and injuring 23 others, reports our correspondent.
The deceased are Razzak Gazi, 40, of Dakkhin Bedkashi village; Shariful Islam, 35, of Koyra; Abu Taleb Gazi, 50, of Bagali; Mostafa Gazi, 50, of Uttar Khapani; and Nur Islam Sarder, 39, of Paikgasa.
Habil Hosen, officer-in-charge of Dumuria Police Station, said the accident occurred when the Khulna-bound “Moumita Paribahan” veered off the road and fell into the ditch in Boratia area under Dumuria upazila around 12:30pm.
The injured were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital and Dumuria Upazila Health Complex, he added.
Rezaul Islam, 45, an injured passenger, alleged that ignoring passengers' request, the driver was driving recklessly. Rezaul is undergoing treatment at the health complex.
Police could not detain the driver or his helper as they fled soon after the accident.
In Bhola, a man and a 12-year-old boy were killed and six people injured following a collision between a human-haulier and a trolley in Helipad area of Charfassion upazila in the morning, reports UNB.
The deceased are Mansur Talukder, 45, a resident of Osmanganj union; and Siam, son of Md Masud, of Aslampur union, said Enamul Haque, officer-in-charge of Charfassion Police Station.
In Kishoreganj, two persons were killed and 30 others injured in two accidents in Pakundia and Karimganj upazilas.
In Pakundia upazila, Jarina Begum died after a Kishereganj-bound bus collided with a pick-up van. Nineteen others were injured.
In another incident, a Dhaka-bound bus plunged into a pond in Karimganj upazila, killing Helal Mia on the spot and injuring 11 others.
In Khagrachhari, an NGO worker Sugata Chakma, 42, was killed as a microbus hit his motorcycle at Lemuchhari in sadar upazila.
