Can the Afghans pull off another surprise?
Sri Lanka will begin the Mirpur-leg of the Asia Cup with an aim to seal a spot in the final of the tournament when they take on high-flying Afghanistan today. Relishing on the experience gathered from the pre-tournament bilateral series against the Tigers, the Lankans have by far been the best team of the competition so far.
The Afghans, who received congratulatory messages from their country's president and finance minister yesterday, following their unexpected win over the hosts, have nothing to lose and hope to continue their enthusiastic run in the tournament.
However, the task against Sri Lanka, who have been nearly flawless in this tournament, is expected to be far more challenging than their previous games. The Lankans have had a number of players stand up for them at the right intervals of the games. The first match saw them scrape a win over Pakistan, courtesy of Lasith Malinga's fiery five-wicket haul towards the end of the match.
In the second game against India, it was a Kumar Sangakkara special that took them over the line in tense conditions. They also have the likes of Lahiru Thirimanne and Mahela Jayawardene who the Afghans will have to keep their eyes on.
Despite having attained a comfortable position in the competition, the Sri Lankans made it clear that there would be no room for complacency.
"We watched their game [on Saturday] and they have some really good bowlers. We have been in good touch, but there is no scope of taking them lightly," said Thirimanne during the pre-match briefing yesterday.
