Industrial Robot in KUET
Jamil-ur-Rob & Jannat Newaz
Robots are one of the most intriguing technological advancements of our time. Using robots for automation is the future of our planet. Robot are doing everything these days, from making a morning cup of tea and keeping our house clean to helping with advanced military training and saving lives in the operating rooms. From the Bangladesh perspective Robotics is still a new coccept.
A high tech human friendly robot that is mostly applicable for industrial purposes has been made by Prof. Dr. Syed Ali, Dept. of ME and Head of Energy technology, KUET named “Programmable Pneumatic Robot (PNR-1)”. The robot is mainly operated by a pneumatic power source. Compressed air is used to operate the pneumatic power cylinder for lifting up and down, rotating body holding materials etc. The operations of pneumatic cylinders are controlled by pneumatic controlled valves, which are closed and opened by electric solenoids valves. The solenoids valves are operated in accordance with signals given to a programming unit (PLC or micro controller). The mechanical body of robot consists of the base plate unit, body unit and two handles. All these units are constructed in the KUET workshop with local materials.
The main feature of this robot is that it can load and unload materials used in industrial operations. It can lift 20-100kg of weight depending on the arm length. The costing of this robot is about BDT one lakh. Prof. Dr. Sayed believes that this robot and its modified version have scope for practical implementation in many industrial operations for automation, military equipment and artilleries, three-stage fire fighting system and many other fields.
