Biomedical engineering workshop at AUST

IEEE Bangladesh Section in association with Biomedical Engineering Centre, BUET and IEEE AUST Student Branch organized a workshop on 'Biomedical Signal Measurement and Interpretation' on 31st December 2008, at the AUST campus. The workshop was coordinated by Professor M. Aynal Haque, Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section. In his introductory talk, Professor Aynal talked about the role of engineers in the interdisciplinary field of Biomedical engineering and highlighted the current situation and lacking of BME Education in Bangladesh. Dr. Shamima Parvin Lasker, Professor of Anatomy, City Dental College, Dhaka presented a talk on “Cardiac autonomic neuropathy: Possibility of development of myocardial disarray in diabetes progression link to heart failure”. Dr. M. Atahar Ali, Associate Professor (Cardiology), NICVD, Dhaka gave a talk on “Basic Electrophysiology”, while Engineer Hafizur Rahman Khan presented a talk titled “CT Evolution Inside The Human”. IEEE student members from different universities including AUST, BRACU, BUET and IUT attended the workshop.
Seminar on Renewable Energy at KUET

A seminar on Promotion of Renewable Energy In Bangladesh organized by the interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) was held on 08-09 January at KUET in corporation with Khulna City Corporation, German Technical Cooperation (gtz), Rural services Foundation (RSF), University of Bremen-Institute of Technology & Education (ITB), Technology Transfer Center (TTZ), Bremerhaven Germany, Institute of Renewable Energy (IRE) of European Research Academy (EURAC), Bozen, Italy. In the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Khulna, Talukder Abdul Khaleque spoke on the occasion as the chief guest. Among other dignitaries Prof. Dr. Md. Nawsher Ali Morol, V. C. KUET; Dr Engr. Bibhuti Roy, University of Bremen; Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed; Prof. Dr. A. N. M. Mizanur Rahman, Chairman of organizing committee, IRG KUET; Dr. Gerhard Schories, Technology Transfer Centre, Germany; Dr. Md. Alamgir; Prof. Dr. Mihir Ranjan Halder, secretary, organizing committee; Alhaj Md. Liakat Ali, Chairman, WASA Khulna and faculty members of different universities were present.
In this seminar 16 technical papers were presented from the researchers in the field of photovoltaic system, solar thermal heating, solar cooling and others. There were also two keynote sessions featuring 'sustainable renewable for Bangladesh'- by Prof. Dr. AKM Sadrul Islam, IUT, Gazipur and 'Promotion of Renewable Energy In Bangladesh'- by Dr. Engr. Khursheed Ul Islam, Sr. Advisor sustainable energy for development (SED), GTZ , Dhaka.
Cattle distributed among poor farmers at BAU

Red Chittagong Seed Cattle Transfer Programme under “Community Driven Livelihood Programme with Red Chittagong Cattle”, a sustainable poverty alleviation program was held at BAU Dairy Farm on January 8. The programme was jointly organized by World Vision Bangladesh (WVB) and Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).
BAU Vice-Chancellor Professor M. A. Sattar Mandal addressed the function as chief guest while Professor Md. Ali Akbar, Dean, Faculty of Animal Husbandry of BAU and Theophil Hajong, Operations Director, World Vision Bangladesh were present as special guests with Professor Dr. Md. Shahid Ullah Talukder, Director, BAU Research System in the chair.
Launching of Daffodil International University Alumni Association

The launching Ceremony of Daffodil International University Alumni Association (DIU AA) was held on Friday, January 9 at the DIU Auditorium. DIU Governing body Chairman Md. Sabur Khan, Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice-Chancellor, Professor M. Shahjahan Mia, Advisor Mr. Md. Mominul Islam, initiator of the association addressed at the opening session. Mr. Raquibul Ahmed, Secretary General of Dhaka University Alumni Association were present at the program. IUB Welcomes American Study-Abroad Students
A group of 24 students from across the United States representing 10 universities were in Bangladesh as part of Bangladesh Study Abroad Program (BSAP), which began on the 29th of December 2008 and ended on the 10th of January 2009. Their main focus being Micro Finance in Bangladesh, the students visited project areas of BRAC, ASA and Grameen Bank. The Study Abroad Programme was organized by School of Social Work, Southern Illinois University Carbondale in cooperation with Case Western Reserve University and Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).
The students had the opportunity to meet Nobel Laureate Professor Mohammad Yunus at Mirpur who talked about the features of micro credit program run by Grameen Bank and all other programs run by them besides micro credit.
The students were amazed and excited to meet and talk with Prof. Yunus, the first and only Nobel Laureate in Bangladesh.
Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) hosted a dinner to welcome the team of American Students where the US Ambassador James F Moriarty and his wife, Mrs. Lauren Moriarty were also present to meet the students. Catherine Hallock, of American Center, Vice Chancellor of IUB Professor Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, Chairman of IUB Founding Trust, Mr. Abdul Hafiz Choudhury, Vice Chairman Ambassador C M Murshed, Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr. Towhid Samad and Faculty participants Professor Mizanur R Miah, (Southern Illinois University Carbondale), Esther Jones Langston (University of Nevada Las Vegas), Deborah R. Jacobson, (Case Western Reserve University), Directors of the Schools of IUB, Heads of the Departments, were all present on the occasion.
Orientation Ceremony for newly admitted students of East West University held

The orientation ceremony for freshly admitted students of East West University Bangladesh (EWUB) was held on 14th January at the EWUB auditorium where the parents and guardians of the freshers were present. Mubdi A Shelley, Professor Mohammed Sharif, Colonel Shah Murtoza Ali (Retd), Md Kamrul Hasan, respectively the Acting President of the Board of Directors, Vice Chancellor, Registrar and Pro Vice Chancellor spoke on the occasion. The speakers impressed upon the guardians about the importance of closely monitoring the academic performance of the students. At the end of each semester a transcript of each student's performance is sent to the guardians to let them know about their ward's academic performance or lack thereof. Students are admitted to the university through a very rigorous process. For this semester Spring 2009 out of 2712 who appeared in the admission test, only 702 of them could be admitted. EWUB has an excellent Library and state-of-the art labs. The faculty members include as many as 84 PhD holders and many have Masters degree from different prestigious overseas universities. The VC in his speech highlighted the importance of extra-curricular activities in addition to the curricular ones for the personal development of students.

BUBT organizes seminar on Tagore
THE English Department of Bangladesh University of Business & Technology (BUBT) organized a seminar entitled 'The voyage-in Tagore and London' on 7th January. M.S. Rizawana Siddiq Tulip was the main speaker at the seminar. Her scholarly article enchanted the audience with intellectual enlightenment of discovering Rabindranath Tagore in a new light. In her lecture Tulip discussed various aspects of Tagore's life and works on the ground of London. A number of teachers and students of different departments attended the seminar. Mr A F M Sarwar Kamal, Chairman, BUBT Syndicate, Prof Md Abu Saleh, Vice Chancellor, BUBT, Prof Md Ali Azam, Pro-Vice Chancellor, BUBT, Prof Md Enayet Hossain Miah, Registrar, BUBT, Prof A.B. Md Bodruddoza, Controller of Examination, BUBT, Prof Abu Taher Mojumder, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities and of Social Sciences, BUBT were present at the seminar. Prof Md Harunur Rashid, Formerly Professor of English, Department of English, Jahangirnagar University presided over the seminar.
Orientation of BBA at SEU

An orientation program for the batch 21 of BBA students was held On Monday 12 th January 2009,on seminar hall of SEU. Prof Dr. M Shamsher Ali, Vice Chancellor, Southeast University, welcomed the new student.
He mentioned that the graduates of this program would find a broad spectrum of outlook about the society as well as their own benefit. Prof Dr Sayed Masud Hossain, Dean, School of Business Studies, and Prof Abu Ahmed, Pro vice chancellor of SEU Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of Department of Business Administration also spoke on the occasion.
Seminar on Computer and Internet held at SEU
A seminar on Application of Computer and Internet for Promotion of Distance Education in Bangladesh was held on 31 December, 2008 at the Conference Room of Southeast University, organized by its Center for Open and Virtual Learning (COViL). The two guest speakers were Prof Shahjahan Khan, University of Southern Queensland and Dr Mohammad Rasul, Central Queensland University.
Prof. M Shamsher Ali, the VC of SEU was present as Chief Guest, Prof. Abu Ahmed, the ProVC was the Special Guest while Prof. Dr Manzurul Islam, Adviser, COViL was in the Chair. Deans of the schools attended the meeting along with other discussants.
The speakers emphasized on technology oriented educational system in Bangladesh as this has been successfully in operation in Australia and other places of the world. They appreciated the functioning of open and virtual Learning in Southeast University like other virtual universities of the World.
