Stock regulator's silver jubilee celebration starts tomorrow

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) plans to organise a weeklong event to celebrate its silver jubilee.

Saifur Rahman, executive director of the stockmarket regulator, announced the programme schedule at a press meet at the BSEC office in Dhaka yesterday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has agreed to inaugurate the event at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre tomorrow, he said.

The stockmarket watchdog—established on June 8 in 1993 under the Securities and Exchange Commission Act, 1993—will organise seminars, discussions and family get-together as part of the celebration.

The commission has introduced many legal changes in the system for the sake of the stockmarket since its inception, said Farhad Ahmed, executive director of the BSEC.

Now, the BSEC is considered an 'A' category regulator worldwide for its contribution to the market, he said.

Ahmed said the regulator initiated automation in the stockmarket and established a central depository system. Now, the capital market regulator has modern surveillance software to stop or catch illegal trading instantly, he said.

A special tribunal was also formed for the capital market and it has so far punished some individuals, he added.

Md Anowarul Islam, another executive director, was also present at the press meet.
