Realistic steps needed for dairy self-sufficiency
Experts on Saturday stressed the need for taking concerted, realistic steps involving all stakeholders for attaining self-sufficiency in the dairy sector.
The remark came at a roundtable on “Pran Dairy Hub and potential dairy sector” organised by Pran Dairy at Pran Dairy Complex at Shahjadpur in Sirajganj, the company said in a statement.
Hiresh Ranjan Bhowmik, director general at the Department of Livestock Services, said the country's dairy sector was moving forward despite many hurdles.
Milk production reached 94 lakh tonnes in 2018 whereas it was only 12 lakh tonnes in 2005. Nathu Ram Sarker, director general of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, said, “We all have to help farmers attain self-sufficiency in dairy.”
He also emphasised on giving effort on enhancing milk production as well reduction of production cost to benefit farmers. Md Muniruzzaman, executive director at Pran Dairy, said, “We always try to encourage farmers to increase milk production. We not only think about business but also work to develop the life standards of farmers.”
