ACC to check if firms submit fabricated financial statements
The Anti-Corruption Commission will investigate allegations that listed companies have submitted fabricated financial statements to various regulators and parties, said its Chairman Iqbal Mahmood.
He said these companies submitted one financial statement to the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, a different statement to banks, and another different one to the income tax department.
Some chartered accountancy firms have prepared these financial statements for the same year, he said.
"I am personally surprised to hear that. How is it possible? It is corruption and it should be stopped," Mahmood said.
"Honourable minister, I assure you that we will probe these allegations," he said at a programme at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka where Finance minister AMA Muhith was present.
Mahmood said the CA firms that prepare financial statements would have to make one single report that would be submitted to the BSEC, banks and the National Board of Revenue.
He made the comments at an award giving ceremony organised to honour the best-performing upazila-level corruption prevention committees in Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.
Muhith said combatting corruption is not an easy task, but the government is not sitting idle.
He said the government has adopted a long-term integrity strategy to fight graft.
The salary of government employees has been increased so that none resorts to corruption out of greed, said the minister.
Despite these steps, it will not be possible to free the country from corruption overnight, he said.
At the function, the corruption prevention committees in Narsingdi and Mymensingh got the best performance award in the district category.
Trishal, Bakshiganj, Sarishabari, Gafargaon, Savar, Kalihati, Monohardi, and Rajoir received the honour in the upazila category.
