Bodies of 10 launch capsize victims recovered
Police recovered the bodies of 10 missing victims from different rivers in four districts today, two days after a launch capsized in Padma.
Of the deceased, four were recovered in Bhola, two each in Chandpur, Shariatpur and Barisal.
With this, deaths of 13 passengers of the ill-fated launch have been confirmed.
The rescuers could not locate the sunken launch even two days after the double-decker launch, Pinak-6, capsize in Padma with more than 200 passengers on board near Mawa Ghat in Munshiganj on Monday.
At least 129 passengers are still missing, according to the information centre set up by the district administration.
Soon after the launch capsized, police confirmed the deaths of two female passengers.
BHOLA
Police and locals recovered the bodies of four passengers of Pinak-6 from Meghna, said Mobasher Ali, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
Police recovered the body of Saidul Karim Farhad, 30, son of Lutfar Rahman of Kathalia upazila of Jhalakati district, from the river in Ramdashpur area around 8:30am.
Police recovered a SIM card (subscriber identity module) from the pocket of the victim and confirmed his identity by making a call to his family members, the OC said.
Contacted over phone, victim's father told our correspondent that his son was a BBA third year student of Tejgaon College in Dhaka.
Two hours later, local people recovered the body of a man, aged around 40, from Meghna in Kathimatha area of Sadar upazila. Around Tk 10,000 was also found from his possession. His identity could not be known immediately.
Another body of a teenage boy was found floating in the river in Bhangtirkhal area of the upazila around noon.
Later, police also recovered the body of a man, aged around 45, from Meghna in Munshirhat area of Doulatkhan upazila around 7:45pm, Mir Khairul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Doulatkhan Police Station.
CHANDPUR
Police recovered the bodies of a woman and a youth from Meghna in Haimchar upazila between 9:00am and 11:00am.
Amir Zafar, superintendent of police in Chandpur confirmed that the two were the victims of the launch capsize in Padma.
BARISAL
Barisal Bandar police recovered the body of a woman floating in Chhoto Kalabadar river near Lahara ferry ghat in Barisal Sadar upazila 1:45pm.
Rezaul Islam, officer-in-Charge of Barisal Bandar Police Station, told our Barisal correspondent that the woman, whose identity could not be known immediately, might be a victim of the launch capsize.
Meanwhile, police recovered a body of child, aged around 8, from Meghna in Mehedignaj Upazila around 6:00pm, said Uzzal Kumar Dey, officer-in-charge of Mehediganj Police Station.
