BNP slates Hasina for "trying to foil Khaleda's N'ganj visit"
BNP yesterday criticised, what they claimed, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's invitation on May 14 to the family members of the slain Narayanganj seven for meeting her at the Prime Minister's Office, which coincides with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's pre-scheduled visit to the district to console them.
The party also demanded that the government form a three-member probe body headed by a retired chief justice to find the real perpetrators behind the killing.
As BNP was denied permission to hold a rally in Narayanganj on May 14, the party on May 9 announced that its chief would visit the city on that date to console the family members.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, deceased panel mayor Nazrul's father-in-law told reporters that the premier had invited the family members to the Prime Minister's Office on May 14.
However, officials at the PMO could neither confirm the invitation nor the date.
Talking to reporters after offering prayers at Ziaur Rahman's grave in the city along with party activists, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the invitation overlapping Khaleda's programme was “devoid of political etiquette”.
“She could have fixed the programme a day before or after the BNP chief's pre-scheduled programme,” Fakhrul said. “But it's the culture of Awami League to want to foil the programmes of the opposition.”
Pointing to a resolution passed in the BNP standing committee meeting Saturday night, Fakhrul said the meeting had demanded that the government form a three-member probe body as it was trying to save those involved in the killing.
A retired cabinet secretary and a human rights activist will be the two other members of the body, he said.
Accusing the government of using the law enforcers, especially Rab, for killing and abduction of opposition leaders and activists, Fakhrul questioned the necessity of the elite force.
