BNP demands retrial of BDR carnage case
BNP today demanded retrial and reinvestigation of the BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) carnage case as 'the trial was conducted hurriedly'.
"It was not a proper trial as the masterminds or the perpetrators behind the massacre were not brought to book," BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
Fakhrul made the remark, on behalf of the party, on the fifth anniversary of the heinous incident that killed 74 people, including 57 army officers.
BNP had planned to organise a memorial discussion at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh on the deceased army officials and their family members killed in the mutiny but the police did not allow the party to proceed with the programme.
“We applied for the permission on February 17 and till last night they (DMP) assured us of the permission but this morning the auditorium authorities told us that the police did not give permission for the programme,” Fakhrul said at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office this afternoon.
"The trial process was completed hurriedly. So we demand the government to conduct a fair investigation into the heinous incident," Fakhrul said.
He was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman Mausoleum Complex at Chandrima Udyan in the city today.
Meanwhile, BNP Standing Committee Member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman Fakhrul said a deep-rooted conspiracy lies behind the massacre.
The masterminds are yet to be arrested, he said while placing wreaths at the graveyard of the army personnel who sacrificed their lives during the carnage on February 25-26 in 2009.
A Dhaka court on November 5 last year awarded death penalty to 150 members of the erstwhile BDR and two civilians for their role in the massacre.
It also sentenced 161 others, including ex-BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and ward-level Awami League leader Torab Ali, to life imprisonment for involvement in the carnage.
