Bloomberg Philanthropies to save children from drowning
In Bangladesh, childhood drowning is the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1-4 years. Being a low lying country, Bangladesh has the high burden of childhood death due to drowning. More than 32 children between the ages of 1-4 years old die every day in Bangladesh. Inadequate or lack of supervision, high exposure to water hazards, lack of education and poverty are some of the major risk factors for children.
With a view to preventing avoidable deaths from drowning, Bloomberg Philanthropies has launched the Saving of Lives from Drowning (SoLiD), Bangladesh Project in collaboration with three organisations — the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit, the Center for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) and icddr,b.
Under the project, they will provide interventions that are aimed at minimising exposure of children to water hazards in seven Upazilas (Matlab North, Matlab South, Manohardi, Sherpur sadar, Raiganj, Chadpur Sadar, and Daudkandi) of the country.
