Bid on to save masterminds
Victims' family members and lawyers have expressed disappointment over the Rab's probe into the Narayanganj seven-murder, saying a move is on to save the masterminds.
Though it's a positive sign that the Rapid Action Battalion finally has admitted its complicity, the architects of the gruesome murder are yet to be unmasked, said Sakhawat Hossain Khan, president of Naryanganj Bar Association, yesterday.
The Rab is also trying to save some of its members, he alleged at a press conference. "The probe committee formed by the public administration ministry in its primary report mentioned that 27 Rab men were involved in the killings. Then why were their names dropped from the Rab report?"
Archana Sarker, wife of lawyer Chandan Sarkar, one of the murdered seven, said the Rab probe body has to make it clear exactly whose interest the killings meant to serve.
They gave their reactions following media reports on the Rab probe into the April 27 abduction and killing of Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his four associates, and Chandan and his driver.
Talking to The Daily Star on Thursday, a member of the Rab investigation body said they found Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Maj Arif Hossain involved in the seven-murder from beginning till end.
“A group of Rab members led by Tareque and Arif worked for councillor Nur Hossain to abduct and kill his archrival councillor Nazrul Islam,” said the official.
“But the Rab team had to abduct and kill six others as they witnessed Nazrul's abduction.”
The report, yet to be officially released, will be submitted to the High Court bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore on December 10.
Earlier on November 23, the four-member Rab probe team sent the report to the Attorney General's Office for placing it to the HC.
Yesterday, Sakhawat Hossain Khan also said New Delhi has recently been handed over a list of 40 criminals who are believed to be hiding in India.
But Nur Hossain, who has been arrested in West Bengal, was not on the list. It only proved that the government doesn't want to bring him back because he might reveal names of some big shots involved in the seven-murder, the lawyer added.
Selina Islam Beauty, widow of Nazrul Islam, alleged that her family has been receiving threats from charge-sheeted criminals.
These are the criminals who had been threatening her husband since 15 days before the killing. Still they are not being arrested through she repeatedly had brought up the issue, she added.
However, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Khandaker Mahid Uddin assured the victims of a fair probe, saying the Rab report is not the final one.
The investigation officer of the case will submit the final report, he said, asking the families not to be frustrated. “We need some more time as it is a sensational case and we all want a transparent investigation report."
The police investigation is at its last stage, he claimed.
