Bangladesh to become CICA member today
All member countries of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) have unanimously decided to accept Bangladesh as a full member of the organisation.
Bangladesh's membership will be formalised today right before the 4th Summit of CICA scheduled to open tomorrow in Shanghai, China, said a foreign ministry press release yesterday. The focus of the organisation is on confidence building measures (CBM) including new threats and challenges, economic dimension, environmental dimension and human dimension.
Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood will lead Bangladesh delegation at the summit. Bangladesh has been an observer of CICA since 2010.
The entry of Bangladesh into CICA as a full member is strategically important for Bangladesh as it is being one of the largest political entities in Asia. The foreign ministry said Bangladesh would try to promote trade and investment relations with the CICA member states and could utilise the forum for projecting Bangladesh.
Established in 1999, CICA has 25 members. Its secretariat is situated in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
